Position Summary | The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences invites applications for the 11-month tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Music Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Director of Bands in the Department of Music. The department enjoys endowments and private scholarship funds of approximately $1.6 million, annual university performance scholarships of $800,000, a visiting artist series, and NASM accreditation. Many performances are presented in the new state-of-the-art, 1200-seat, Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall. In January of 2023, the new Windgate Center for the Fine and Performing Arts will open with 100,000 or more square feet of dedicated collaborative arts space including a new 450 seat performance hall, percussion suite, string studios, and a choral rehearsal and recital hall. |
Job Duties and Responsibilities | We seek an artist-teacher with proven experience to direct the UCA Bear Marching Band and other athletic bands; conduct the Symphonic Band (our second audition-based concert band consisting primarily of music majors); University Band and to teach courses in their expertise; coordinate and collaborate with the UCA Athletic Department; and contribute to departmental and university service, including recruiting and retaining students interested in performing in the athletic bands. A demonstrated record of excellence in the following: secondary school marching bands, collegiate marching bands, or drum corps; drill design and/or arranging; strong administrative abilities, collaborative, and interpersonal skills; and a proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in their past program development. |
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | Candidates should demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of, and experience conducting, high-level concert repertoire; either or both drill writing and arranging; and engaging positively with administration, alumni, and donors. The ideal candidate will also supervise, and lead a team of graduate conductors for University Band, teach Marching band techniques, and other courses as appropriate to the candidates experience; coordinate and collaborate with the UCA Athletic Department; and contribute to departmental/university service, including recruiting and retaining students interested in performing in the athletic bands. Other assigned duties may include courses in the following areas: conducting, music theory, applied lessons, and/or ear training. Being a member of the Graduate Faculty is an expectation for this position. |

Required Education and/or Experience | Qualifications include the Ph.D. in Music Education, DMA in Instrumental Conducting (ABD will be considered for appointment), Ed.D., or equivalent, and significant instrumental conducting experience in secondary music education setting. |
